About the Knutty Knotter
The Knutty Knotter is a small UK-based maker of handmade rope products, created slowly by hand and intended to be used.
Paul (AKA The Knutty Knotter) move on board his narrowboat in 2017. What began as a lifestyle change gradually became something else entirely.
Several years later, around 2024, Paul discovered he had an unexpected aptitude for knot tying. This came as a surprise — he’d never considered himself particularly practical or someone who made things with his hands. Yet over time, that quiet curiosity turned into skill, and skill turned into craft.
Paul is a member of the International Guild of Knot Tyers, a charity whose aim is to promote the art and practice of knot tying.
Paul lives aboard the boat with his fiancé, Lee-Ann (Crafted Afloat). During the summer months, they cruise the waterways of Great Britain, moving slowly and living simply. In winter, they usually find a mooring where they stay for a few months at a time.
Life afloat naturally lends itself to making things by hand. Paul now makes rope mats using traditional knotting techniques and quality rope, while Lee-Ann weaves on her loom. Each piece is made carefully and individually, shaped by both the material and the pace of life on the water.
The Knutty Knotter is about practical, well-made rope work, created slowly, by hand, and intended to be used.
